In volume 75 of
Urologia Internationalis published in 2005, Ahmet Metin, Önder Kaygil, and S. Iftekhar Ahmed reported the possibility of giving men with premature ejaculation ( PE ) both an oral medication (fluoxetine) and a topical ointment (lidocaine). The 78 men in the study took 20mg of fluoxetine as needed four (4) hours prior to sexual intercourse for three months. At the end of three months, they were asked to add lidocaine ointment to the glans penis 30 minutes prior to intercourse and then studied for an additional three months. They recorded intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) with a stopwatch during each portion of the trial.
When researchers examined the results from the 48 men who completed the study, they noted that IELT increased during the section of the trial when both treatment modalities were used rather than when fluoxetine was used alone. They concluded that premature ejaculation ( PE ) could be effectively treated by using both an oral medication and a topical ointment.
