SSRI medications and their impact on the field of PE

Updated Dec 13, 2007 at 4:1 EST.

In the November 2007 publication of, The Urologic clinics of North America, Marcel D. Waldinger, MD writes about the impact of SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) in regards to premature ejaculation.

The first SSRI to be tested for premature ejaculation in 1994, was paroxetine (also known as Paxil TM).   Many studies followed which proved the efficacy of the drug by delaying ejaculation.   Further testing revealed that nearly all ( SSRI`s ) except fluvoxamine showed to be effective in the treatment of PE.    Currently the most popular way of treating the symptoms of PE is by daily dosage of   SSRI`s   or by daily dosage and on demand use combined.   A popular SSRI which is gaining a lot of press right now is Dapoxetine ( Prilogy™ ).   This medicine is foreseen to be the leader in the treatment of PE and is being submitted at the moment in Sweden for marketing authorization.
